What is the Community Woodland?
Mab Lane Community Woodland is a new woodland being created in the West Derby area of Liverpool. It is spread across two nearby sites, known as the Mabby (Mab Lane playing fields) and the backfield (or “the backy”). These two sites are connected by Cantril Park (also known as “the swings”).
The woodland is being created by a partnership of a range of Liverpool and Northwest organisations… …and you!
Together the aim is to create the most colourful woodland in the world as a proud legacy of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year, a showpiece for the City’s Year of Environment 09, and a long lasting community asset for all to enjoy.
Where do I come in?
We want to hear your ideas on how you would like to see the woodland take shape. What kind of features would you like to see incorporated at the site? From orchards to footpaths to picnic areas, we’d like to hear your views.
There will also be opportunities to get involved in community events at the site, meaning you can look back in years to come and say “I helped create this woodland!”

If Liverpool city council The Liverpool Culture Company The Forestry Commission, The Riverside Group with the Mersey Forest with the help I hope of the local community get this right and work together what a wonderful legacy we would leave the people of Liverpool. However the one fly in the ointment could be the proposed plan by United Utilities to improve sewerage services by the construction of a building which could or would cover a wide area of the proposed site for the woodland legacy. So I will wait in anticipation for further developments.
United Utilities have confirmed that a public exhibition will be held on Tuesday, 3 March to discuss the proposed Mab Lane scheme.
Engineers will be in attendance at St Albert’s RC Parochial Centre from 2pm-7pm to answer any questions residents or local councillors may have about the proposed scheme and share details of their plans.
The centre’s address is 31 Hollow Croft, Stockbridge Village, L28 4EA.
(Note: The exhibition is about the United Utilities scheme rather than a general exhibition about the Mab Lane Community Woodland).
